Businessman to be extradited from UK charged in armed raid in which Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was mortally wounded

A businessman will be extradited to Ireland in the coming weeks charged with an armed robbery that shot dead a Lake Garda.

Ames Flynn, 31, originally from South Armagh, is accused of robbing the Lordship credit union near Dundalk, Co Louth in January 2013.

During the raid, Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, who was in an armed cash escort, was shot and mortally wounded.

In 2020, Aaron Brady (32) was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 40 years for capital murder.

Inquiries continued after his conviction and last July James Flynn was arrested in Watford on an extradition warrant.

Since then he has been in detention while trying to fight his deportation from the UK.

In April, Westminster Magistrates’ Court ordered his extradition to Ireland, but this has been appealed to the High Court.

Today that appeal was dismissed and James Flynn is to be returned to Ireland to face a formal charge of robbing the credit union.

He is also charged with conspiracy to commit a burglary in different counties between September 2012 and January 2013.

Flynn is expected to be returned to Ireland within the next 14 days and then appear in court to be formally charged.

During the April hearing, Flynn’s lawyer argued that his client should not be extradited because there was a long time between the crime and his arrest.

The court was also told that James Flynn suffered from amnesia and could not remember the events surrounding the time of the credit union robbery.

Lawyers representing the Irish authorities argued that there was only a delay due to the complexity of the investigation, which resulted in 6,000 inquiries, 3,300 statements and 3,300 reports.

The large investigation also included lines of inquiry in Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia and America.

A co-defendant, Dundalk man Brendan ‘Benny’ Treanor’, 33, is due to stand trial in the Special Criminal Court next year, also on robbery and conspiracy to commit burglary. Businessman to be extradited from UK charged in armed raid in which Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was mortally wounded
