Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 requires a phone number to play

THE new Call of Duty game will use the controversial SMS Protect system seen in Overwatch 2.

Activision Blizzard has been making headlines for the wrong reasons for the past week and isn’t stopping anytime soon.

Overwatch 2’s launch was absolute chaos, with long queues to get into the game, frequent kicking of players, and some not even being let in to begin with.

One of the most ridiculous problems has occurred on Xbox where the game kicks players who get an achievement.

Many have worried about how this will affect the October 28 launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

While the performance of the servers remains to be seen, we now know for sure that they will be using the controversial SMS Protect system.

October's game releases are much more than the latest Call of Duty

In an opinion to Blizzard’s website“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, newly created Overwatch 2 accounts, and newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number.”

This system, which appeared in Overwatch 2 last week, requires players to sign up with a phone number in order to play the game.

In isolation, this isn’t a huge problem as the vast majority of players own a mobile phone. However, there is a catch.

This system doesn’t allow you to sign up with a prepaid phone number, which has locked out a large number of players.

The intention behind this is to prevent banned players from signing up with a new account and rejoining the game, but it was mocked by fans.

Many have called it “poor-shaming” as many on low incomes cannot afford a phone plan.

The backlash at Overwatch 2’s launch prompted them to relax that restriction for anyone who owned Overwatch 1.

Unfortunately, since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is an entirely new game, there will be no such relaxation this time.

It’s possible that if the Overwatch 2 launch backlash continues, Activision Blizzard will refrain from using this system, but at the moment that doesn’t seem likely.

That means that if you’re hoping to play the latest Call of Duty games and you’re on a prepaid plan, you should switch to a contract sooner rather than later.
