A sequel to CALL of Duty Warzone is in the works but millions of people may not be able to play it.
The latest reports suggest that the free-to-play title will remain on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
It will be a relief for PlayStation loyalists who fear they may be left in the cold following Xbox owners’ recent major acquisition of COD maker Activision.
But it’s not good news for everyone.
The publisher seems to be focusing on the latest consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, along with PC.
This means that millions of people still using PS4 and Xbox One will not be participating.
According to notorious insider Tom Henderson, the sequel will be “a whole new game for better hardware”.
“Only current generation and PC… No past weapon integration etc”, he tweeted.
He reckons it’ll be out in 2023, so hopes that chip shortages keep many people from upgrading their consoles will ease by then.
The first Call of Duty Warzone has proven to be a huge hit for Activision since its release in 2020.
Last year, the company revealed that it has over 100 million active players.
The latest developments come as Bloomberg reported that the next three Call of Duty titles will be available on both Xbox and PlayStation.
Four sources confirmed that Activision was committed to making the next series of games available on Sony’s consoles before the deal with Microsoft went into effect.
As with Warzone, this is expected to include a new installment to the Modern Warfare spin-off series later this year and another after that.
PlayStation lovers fear that Microsoft could rob some of Activision’s biggest franchises after a successful deal.
These include World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Diablo.
Earlier this month, the tech giant announced it was buying the video game publisher for a staggering $68.7 billion.
