HEAD of Xbox Gaming, Phil Spencer, has announced that Microsoft has signed a 10-year deal to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo consoles.
That deal will only come into effect if Microsoft’s proposed $70 billion (£58 billion) acquisition of publisher Activision Blizzard goes through.
The deal is currently under scrutiny by antitrust authorities around the world amid fears Microsoft could monopolize the gaming industry.
Competitor Sony is fighting back against the acquisitions, claiming that Microsoft’s ownership of Call of Duty PlayStation would be expensive.
However, Xbox claims that it offered PlayStation a 10-year Call of Duty deal once the deal was accepted by Activision Blizzard, which PlayStation declined.
Now that a similar deal has been struck between Nintendo and Xbox, it shows Xbox is open to Call of Duty coming to other platforms.
The first Call of Duty game for Nintendo was Call of Duty 3, released for the Wii in 2006.
Since then, a number of Nintendo consoles have included Call of Duty games, five of which were released for Wii, five for DS and two for Wii U.
However, no game from the series has appeared on a Nintendo console since 2013, when Call of Duty: Ghosts was released on the Wii U.
There are concerns that modern mainline Call of Duty games, like the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, might not run on the comparatively weaker Switch hardware.
However, it will likely take a while for the acquisition to close, and Nintendo may release a newer console by then.
The other option is that Nintendo gets less intense Call of Duty titles like Call of Duty Mobile.
Despite concerns, it’s a big win for Nintendo, which hasn’t had any of the games on its console for almost a decade.
Call of Duty is one of the most popular games in the world, and even poorly rated games in the series end up selling well.
It is still unclear whether the takeover will take place.
