Can a new car already be considered a “legend of the future”? Mercedes seems to think so

Avert your gaze if you’re a staunch “green motorist,” because what follows is classic Mercedes decadence (but there’s something exciting about it, too).
This is the new Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster. There is currently the 381 hp Mercedes-AMG 43 and two four-liter V8 biturbo engines (476 hp or 585 hp). Top speeds reach 295 km/h and each car can reach 100 km/h in less than four seconds.
It promises to be a strong blend of looks and performance – check out this AMG grille. There will be a Formula 1 inspired e-performance hybrid. The 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is standard.
You may feel inclined to avert your gaze further. Prices start at €238,395 for the AMG 43 model. Obviously, there are enthusiasts willing to spend well over €250,000 on one.
Mercedes claims that price is heavily influenced by extremely high trim levels, gently reminding us that most buyers will view acquiring one as a long-term investment.
The SL has been around for almost 70 years (300SL Roadster) and was inspired by a Grand Prix race car that was built for two years
until now.
The new range places a strong emphasis on “performance luxury” with a two+two seating configuration (the first since 1989). It combines analogue geometry with the digital world – and there is a fully digital instrument cluster and the latest MBUX infotainment system.
I hope Mercedes isn’t being a bit pretentious when they claim it’s a ‘true legend for the future’.
It rarely uses such language, but obviously feels it deserves it in this case.
We will see.
