New improvements to the Highway Code give cyclists more protection than ever before, with cyclists now encouraged to stay in the middle of the lane to make them easier to see.
However, if you get stuck behind a cyclist, will you be fined for overtaking them?
Can I be fined for passing a cyclist?
Drivers can be fined for pass cyclists.
Drivers are allowed to pass cyclists on the road but must give them plenty of room, as outlined in Highway code.
According to rule 163, it reads: “As a guide, leave at least 1.5 meters when passing cyclists at speeds up to 30 km/h and give them extra space when passing at higher speeds.”
However, if motorists are caught driving too close to cyclists when they pass, they risk a £100 fine and three points on their license.
Are cars allowed to pass cyclists?
Under the Highway Code improvements for 2022, more cyclists are now provided strength on the roads more than ever.
A motorist must not cut across to a bicyclist intending to go ahead when turning into or out of an intersection or changing direction or lane.
Cyclists will also get additional priority at roundabout.
Drivers should not pass when they are circling or getting too close.
Bicyclists must also be allowed to cross the motorway when they go around the roundabout.
When must cyclists be on the road?
In previous editions of The Highway Code, the ideal road location for cyclists was never mentioned.
It is common for cyclists to stay close to the curb to the left of their lane or in a bike lane.
Cyclists will now be able to go in the middle of the lane at certain times, such as on quieter roads and in slower-moving traffic.
Rule 72 of the Highway Code states: Drive in the middle of your lane, so you can see as clearly as possible, in the following cases:
On quiet roads or streets – if a faster car comes behind you, move left to allow them to pass, if you can safely do so.
“When traffic moves slower – when traffic around you begins to move more freely, move to the left if you can safely do so so that faster vehicles behind can can pass.
“In places near intersections or narrow roads where it would be unsafe for drivers to pass you.”
