Of course, Ti West wants you to see both of his films and considering a third entry in the series, “MaXXXine,” is in the pipeline, that would probably be ideal. But if the “X” comes up when you’re not feeling as comfortable going to the movies as you are now, it’s not like you’ve missed an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. West told Film’s own BJ Colangelo:
“You don’t have to see ‘X’ to like ‘Pearl’, it enriches it if you do. And you don’t have to see ‘Pearl’ to like ‘X’, but it enriches it. But it’s always been considered indie films, like “Manhunter” and “The Silence of the Lambs.” There were three films, ‘The Silence of the Lambs,’ and Hannibal Lecter was the one through and through. ‘ Pearl’ and said, “Oh, but this is right up my alley.” So in many ways, hopefully, it will expand it to everyone. Or it brings people to see ‘X’ that they probably wouldn’t have, because now they have a renewed interest in it. “
I firmly believe that every franchise entry will not depend on you viewing each chapter. Filmmakers lose themselves by bidding something from a previous movie or setting up a future movie, creating dramatic experiences that are less than satisfying in the moment. They are only interested in maintaining your own mythology and not serving your story and characters correctly. The connections need to be the coating – not the flesh – of this film bread. Ti West gets that, and “Pearl” is a great Reuben… well, prequel.
