Canelo Alvarez doesn’t want to think about a fight with Jake Paul for now, but if the YouTube star can keep stepping up, he’d be open to talks in two years time.
Paul has previously admitted that Alvarez is too big a step up for him at this point in his rookie boxing career, but he would fight pound-for-pound no. 1 after he’s racked up a few more wins.
The 25-year-old has just five professional fights under his belt, while Alvarez has 60 fights under his belt before his WBA light heavyweight title fight against Dmitry Bivol this Saturday in Las Vegas.
Alvarez was asked about a fight with Paul during a media scrum ahead of his upcoming fight, to which he replied: “I think why are you guys asking me about this fight? Maybe we can talk in two years, we’ll see in two years.”

“I hope he does a really good job and improves in boxing, I say that seriously. He’s bringing more fans to boxing and he’s not crazy, it’s okay to dream. You have to set goals and dream, that’s ok. It’s good to dream.”
Paul has since responded to Alvarez’s comments by saying: “Lots of respect for Canelo for doing the impossible and creating his own track and legacy. He can see the optimism it takes to do something that has never been done before,” he wrote on Instagram.
“Whereas this interviewer and Eddie Hearn call it madness, the greats call it confidence. Not everyone inherits their father’s company like Eddie Hearn. Some of us had to believe in ourselves when we had absolutely nothing and foresaw no possible way to overcome our circumstances other than confidence.”
Paul believes that he and Alvarez would be friends in another pastime, and although the American has repeatedly pushed for a fight against him, the American has respect for Alvarez’s boxing achievements.
“The Problem Child” plans to face Alvarez in the last fight of his boxing career and then retire. Paul, who is 6’2″ and weighs 193 pounds for his fights, admits he’s no better boxer than Alvarez but is “faster” and “more athletic” than he is.
“I’m taller than Canelo, I’m faster than Canelo, I’m sportier than Canelo. Can I box better? Probably not, but after three years it’s going to be a big fight. Two of the biggest names in boxing back to back,” he told ESPNs first take
