CAO offers 2022: re-leaving is an option, but grades will likely be worse in 2023

Retaking the Leaving Cert is always an option, but students must consider each such possibility very carefully.

It’s been another year of elevated grades, and the big question for those who might be thinking of repeating it is, “Can I do better next time?”

In normal times, repeating can pay off, but we have not been in normal times and no one knows what the distribution of grades will be next year.

Education Secretary Norma Foley has said there will be no ‘cliff drop’ from the 2020-2022 high profile profiles, but even a slight dip in 2023 would mean results overall will be lower than this year. So anyone who repeats themselves could be worse off.

Another question is: Why haven’t I achieved what I hoped for this year? in relation to career aspirations.

It’s worth looking for different ways to advance. You may not start your career where you hoped, but you can still work toward the same endpoint. Even if the CAO offer you received isn’t your first choice, it can get you where you want to be.

The repetition possibilities are limited. Return to school is at the discretion of the principal and most schools do not offer this.

There are also the so-called “Grind Schools” that offer the Leaving Certificate course over a year. These are an expensive option and are not available nationwide.

Some continuing education colleges, operating under local Education and Training Bodies (ETBs), offer a repeat year and fees are much lower than grind schools.
