There are many reasons a young person might consider deferring a CAO offer. This may include hopes of working for a year, trying other experiences and travelling. This year, some students may wish to postpone because they may not be able to find or afford housing.
or candidates who feel that access to housing might be a barrier to accepting an offer they would otherwise accept, I would strongly recommend deferring that offer rather than declining it.
The possibility of deferral enables a successful applicant to postpone entry until autumn 2023.
Gap years can be of great benefit to young people and provide an opportunity to gain work experience, develop transferable skills or discover other interests. Students used this option to do some very interesting things, increasing their likelihood of succeeding at the third level.
Deferment is not guaranteed to any applicant, and granting such deferral is at the discretion of the institution. However, most colleges are fairly open to it. The course LM101 (Graduate Medicine, University of Limerick) only grants a postponement in exceptional cases.
Anyone considering a deferral should think carefully and ensure they are choosing this option for the right reasons. It is also important to have a plan for how to spend this year.
It may be advisable to speak to family and friends or the school counselor. The National Parents Council Post Primary Hotline – 1800 265 165 – is manned by careers counselors who can also provide advice.
While anyone contemplating a postponement should take the time to think carefully, they should also start preparing right away.
Initially, applicants should not accept the offer. Instead, contact the admissions office of the university immediately and in writing. Do this by email with “Deferred Entry” in the subject line, or by post with “Deferred Entry” clearly marked on the envelope. The applicant should also provide the college with their name, CAO number and CAO code for the course offered.
If the institution is willing to grant a deferral, they will tell the applicant what they need to do. These instructions should be followed closely. If a higher preference course becomes available in a later round, the applicant will receive that offer even if they have deferred an earlier one. The applicant is free to accept this higher preference or to request a shift of this place. For more information on deferral, see the CAO manual on cao.ie
Many institutions do not welcome requests for deferrals to allow the student to take another course or repeat the Leaving Cert.
