Capel Street Dublin has been named one of the coolest streets in the world by Time Out

Capel Street was named the 22nd coolest street in the world by Time Out, beating Grafton Street and Temple Bar.

The magazine named the newly traffic-free street as the top cultural and social destination in Dublin, ranking higher than locations in New York, Madrid and Tokyo.

The magazine’s name comes from Panti Bar, advising visitors to spend “a gloomy night” at “the home of Ireland’s most famous drag queen”.

Panti, aka Rory O’Neill, tweeted in response that it was “great that Capel Street was named one of the coolest streets in the world (#22) and obviously I wholeheartedly agree.”

Bar 1661’s name was also checked out by Time Out, telling readers they could drink “something else at Ireland’s first Poitín bar”.

The general manager of the award-winning cocktail bar, Will Lynch, told he felt Capel Street was an “up and coming area with cheaper rents than the Southside and a range of new restaurants, cafes and bars”.

He also thinks the pedestrian zone plan implemented during the pandemic has improved the atmosphere on Capel Street.

“We only set up our bar here three years ago,” Will said. “When the street became pedestrianized, we noticed extra football.

“It brings more people to the region. Everyone has been spending more time outdoors in the summer and the place has experienced a real European city feel.”

The magazine says Capel Street is a cultural hub with “some of the best food in Dublin, usually no frills”.

“The locals know they’re good, so there’s no need to get excited,” it adds.

“There’s always something new to discover on Capel Street, whether it’s a steaming bowl of authentic pho, a lively Moroccan restaurant with lunch-to-evening karaoke, or brunch at the hugely popular Brother Hubbard.”

According to Time Out, the pedestrianized area of Capel Street added to the overall atmosphere

Time Out notes that the driving ban has also made the street “the ideal place to have a beer in the sun and just hang out.”

Dublin Mayor Caroline Conroy told she was “delighted” at the recognition for the city’s north location.

“I am delighted that Capel St has made this list. I used to ride my bike down this street to City Hall meetings, dodging the cars. It’s heaven now, day and night,” she said.

“I know we still have a lot of work to do, but we’ve made a start and today’s announcement is further proof that we’re moving in the right direction.”

Capel Street landed at number 22 on the list, one spot ahead of Jumeirah Beach Road in Dubai.

Rue Wellington in Montreal, Canada was named number one coolest street in the world, and Time Out praised its selection of “killer cocktail bars, standout brunch spots.” Capel Street Dublin has been named one of the coolest streets in the world by Time Out
