Carabao Cup Draw LIVE: Newcastle, Everton, Leeds & more learn second round fixtures

The draw for the second round of the Carabao Cup takes place on Wednesday night, with Premier League clubs not participating in European competition set to play their lower-tier rivals. That means the likes of Everton, Southampton and Newcastle United will be involved, as will the three newly promoted teams, some of whom have already spent big bucks this summer.

Last season it was Liverpool who triumphed at Wembley and beat Chelsea on penalties to claim a record Ninth League Cup success. They and other teams playing in Europe enter the competition from the third round. So there is another hurdle for EFL sides if they want a big game against the best in the nation.

Eight first round matches will be played over the course of the evening before the draw, with 35 first round winners progressing to join Burnley, Watford and 13 Premier League sides participating from that point. The draw remains regionalized for the second round to save on travel costs and time, with a northern and a southern part.

Chelsea wondered what could have been when Timo Werner’s coup failed

A quick look at the latest from the Premier League as we await the highlight of today’s games: Richard Jolly analyzes a big move by Chelsea that ended with more of a whimper as Timo Werner returns from where he came from.

It was day two of Project Restart in the Premier League. As the grounds were emptied, belts were tightened. Or at least most of them. Taking advantage of others’ inability to spend, Chelsea turned to Roman’s bank. They activated Timo Werner’s release clause at RB Leipzig. It was a time when using Roman Abramovich’s funds seemed more like a legitimate ruse. And as budgets were frozen amid uncertainty elsewhere, Chelsea stole a march on Europe’s elite by snapping up the Bundesliga’s two most sought-after young talents.

A seemingly Real Madrid-bound Kai Havertz was diverted to Stamford Bridge. Werner, who had long eyed Liverpool, joined his compatriot in London. Havertz has a Champions League final winner to show for a mixed spell at Chelsea along with the possibility of potential being realised. Werner has the medal, but when he retires to Leipzig it costs about half its original price. A transfer fee of £25m would mean a similar loss for Chelsea. Coupled with the likelihood they’ll end up writing a lot more off Romelu Lukaku after his reunion came in the form of a loan to Inter Milan and recent examples of Abramovich’s generosity haven’t brought the desired benefit to Chelsea. Instead of inheriting a strong attack, Clearlake Capital may have bought problems.

Carabao Cup Draw: When is the second round draw and how can I watch?

The draw for the second round of the 2022/23 Carabao Cup takes place on Wednesday night, when a number of Premier League sides get into the fray and learn who they will face when they begin their hunt for silverware.

The first round sees clubs from Championship, League One and League Two going head-to-head – with most of those clashes taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, although third-rate Cambridge stunned higher-tier opponents in the form of Millwall to a 1-1. 0 win in the opening match of this year’s competition last week.

However, the 13 Premier League clubs not involved in European competitions this season enter the second round as they begin their journey to succeed Liverpool as Carabao Cup champions after the Reds defeated Chelsea after a 0-0 Draw 11-10 on penalties defeated final in February.

Cody Gakpo responds to Manchester United transfer interest

Cody Gakpo has hinted PSV securing Champions League football could make him decide against a move to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old Netherlands international is the latest name to be linked with Old Trafford as new manager Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his squad in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

United are yet to open talks with Gakpo or PSV though – as reported by The Independent on Tuesday – their interest in the winger is known.

Gakpo featured as PSV progressed to the Champions League qualifying rounds with a 3-2 win against Monaco on Tuesday night. They now face Rangers for a place in the group stage.

“We have to focus on that first and try to make it to the Champions League,” Gakpo said ESPN after the game when asked about his future.
