A mother has been jailed after fabricating an alibi for her teenage son who stabbed a rival to death in a Snapchat dispute.

Karlene Joseph, 43, told police that she had dinner with her son the night Hussein Al-Saabri was murdered.

The 23-year-old died after being stabbed in the stomach in front of horrified shoppers outside Debenhams at St Anns shopping center in Harrow, north west London.

Joseph, from Harrow, Middlesex, called the police to give them false statements about their son, Jahni Menzie-Samuels.

Judge John Hillen told her that “the police gave you every opportunity to withdraw your statement,” but she refused and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Menzie-Samuels and Rickarlo Williams, both 19, were armed with a Rambo knife and machete when they hacked Mr Al-Saabri to death.

A second victim, Jaffar Musair, was also left with seven stab wounds, while Hamoud Al-Hassona suffered a back injury after they too were attacked in December 2020, the Old Bailey heard.

The knife attack was an act of revenge because of a Snapchat dispute, the court said.

Both killers now face life imprisonment.

Joseph’s attorney Stephen Nelson said the nursing home where she worked “is likely to retain her employment now or in the future.”

Judge John Hillen reduced Joseph’s sentence because she has a seven-year-old son and an older son with mental health issues who cannot live alone.

The judge also noted that she has no criminal record and is employed as a team leader at a care home for the elderly in Brent.

He added: “Anyone would understand the maternal instinct to protect your child, but that cannot excuse your willful effort to help a murderer get free.

“I take note of the impact this will have on your seven-year-old, but that’s up to you.”

Joseph denied tampering with the course of justice.
