Carl Cox performs at the On the Beach Festival in Brighton

DAY THREE of Brighton’s On the Beach Festival promised, and certainly delivered, a continuation of stellar dance music.

Led by Hove-based house and techno DJ Carl Cox, the line-up was a huge offering – Nic Fanciulli, Chelina Manuhutu, Russell Small – all invited to play by Cox himself.

The day was filled with sunshine and merriment on the pebbles, and as more and more people arrived, beer and laughter filled the air.

Booming, deep basslines echoed over the banks, while air horns and the shouts of vendors selling bucket hats completed the soundscape.

The demographic was certainly a bit older than Fatboy Slim, who played the previous two nights. Groups of friends I chatted up with on the beach were trying to relive the illegal rave days of the ’90s — and having just as much fun as they did back then.

One partygoer was heard shouting “I’m an old-school raver” — and that pretty much sums it up. The people who came to see Carl play knew what they liked and weren’t just there for a day trip.

And I’m sure they would have been happy with what they got.

As the sun sank lower in the sky and pastel colors scattered all over us, Carl joined us and delivered two of the best hours of heavy house and techno I’ve ever seen.

Compared to the previous two nights, far fewer people lined up at Marine Parade to see him, but the atmosphere was no less intense.

It’s been a real day for heavy dance music lovers – and the weekend is only going to get tougher.

Today marks the final day of the four-day weekender, which sees drum and bass hero Andy C leading another lineup of strong acts. Carl Cox performs at the On the Beach Festival in Brighton
