Carney Chukwuemeka: Chelsea agree with Aston Villa to sign 18-year-old midfielder

Chelsea have agreed a deal for Aston Villa teenager Carney Chukwuemeka.

The 18-year-old midfielder had been frozen by manager Steven Gerrard after he refused to sign a contract extension that expires next summer.

Gerrard dropped the midfielder from the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and he is training with the Under-23s. Gerard is said to have imposed a £20million price tag on the player.

“Aston Villa and Chelsea can confirm that the clubs have reached an agreement on the permanent transfer of Carney Chukwuemeka,” Villa said in a statement.

“The 18-year-old has been granted permission to travel to London both to discuss personal conditions and to undergo a medical.”

Chukwuemeka, who will turn 19 in October, made his first-team debut in May 2021 and made 13 appearances last season but has only made two starts in the Premier League.

“Carney has yet to sign a contract offer that has been in place for some time, so I decided it would be best for him to continue his training program at Bodymoor,” Gerrard said last month.

There was interest from Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund in Chukwuemeka, who is reportedly set to sign a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues also completed a permanent move for 18-year-old Chicago Fire keeper Gabriel Slonina.

The teenager has signed a six-year deal and will be loaned out to the Major League Soccer club until the end of the season before joining his new employers in early 2023.

Slonina, the youngest goalkeeper to play an MLS game at the age of 17 years and 81 days, made his first senior call-up for the United States in December when he came on as a substitute in the 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina .
