Cartel boss Christy Kinahan tried to buy a fleet of Egyptian military aircraft, leaked files show

Crime boss Christy Kinahan tried to buy a fleet of Egyptian military planes for $10 million and planned to establish a loophole in Zimbabwe, according to newly leaked documents.

In July, it was revealed how the Kinahan gang were transporting cocaine across Africa in air ambulances.

It emerged how the cartel had bought out airstrip officials and taken control of the key transport route to Europe, putting the Irish gang second only to the Colombian cartels.

The Irish mafia had effectively taken control of Africa’s lucrative “cocaine corridor” – one of the main routes for importing drugs into Europe.

After the drugs landed in southern Africa, the Kinahan gang used “air ambulances” to transport the cocaine across the continent to ports from which it could be shipped to Europe.

Now the news organization, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), has released details of how Christy senr attempted to secure a series of multi-million euro airline deals while posing as a legitimate broker.

According to the leaked documents, a Dubai-based Kinahan-affiliated company attempted to purchase up to nine used de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalos from the Egyptian Air Force in 2020.

It is said that he has also tried to make lucrative deals in Africa and Latin America and even considered buying an Antonov An-26 turboprop in Venezuela.

Emails show Kinahan is pushing to set up a company in Singapore to broker the Egypt deal.

In late 2019, Kinahan explained in an email that he wanted the company’s website to “create a fog-and-mirror illusion that we’re bigger and better than just a startup company” so that the company could be “in pole position for… aircraft financing and/or” be leasing facilities.”

It is said that Kinahan also tried to set up a home and business center in Zimbabwe, but he was forced to abandon his plans after being denied permanent residency.

ICIJ reveals how Kinahan attended an aviation conference in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm El Sheikh in 2019

The meeting was hosted by the World Food Program and the now former Egyptian Minister of Civil Aviation, Lt. Gen. Younis el-Masri.

Shortly after the conference, the Kinahan-affiliated Dubai airline inquired about the purchase of Egyptian military aircraft.

A company representative wrote to the Egyptian Defense Attaché in Abu Dhabi, Brigadier Hisham Nabil Monir, about the purchase of up to nine DHC Buffalo military transport aircraft for up to $8 million.

According to the leaked documents, in February 2020, Monir sent the Kinahan-affiliated company a list of the aircraft for sale, along with spare parts and equipment.

The following month, the attache sent the company technical information on the Buffalo and gave “Egyptian Air Force Approval.” for a field inspection at Almaza Air Force Base in Cairo.

The ICIJ writes that company officials updated Kinahan – who used the name “CV DXB” – in text messages

They write: “By December 2020, Kinahan and his associates appeared confident that a deal to purchase the nine aircraft would go through, and they said they would wire millions of dollars to help cover the cost, records show.

“‘I will wait until the 10 million is transferred to the company account’

“Two visits to Egypt to see the planes and to discuss the deal took place, the first in December 2020; the second in May 2021 when the team met with four Egyptian Air Force officers.”

It is alleged that Kinahan’s team tried to secure bank loans while negotiating the deal with the Egyptians

According to an account appearing under the letterhead “Christopher Vincent Business Broker,” in January 2021, Kinahan and his business partner met with a Dubai-based lender company to fund the purchase of the Egyptian plane.

“In the meeting, [Kinahan’s associate] said the deal would be “in the region of $20 million,” according to the record.

“…Kinahan agreed that they could probably get to 25 percent. But at 50 percent they weren’t sure, as the transcript shows.

“A [Dubai lender] The representative said she was confused by the deal and, according to the record, needed much more detailed information before proceeding.

“If that [Dubai lender] A representative inquired about Christopher Vincent’s connection….Kinahan self-identified as a “consultant/broker” adding that “he knew and advised the principals of the deal, those who either wanted to buy or were the architects of the deal”.

However, the deal ultimately fell through and screenshots from a September 2021 WhatsApp conversation show Kinahan informing his team that the deal has been cancelled.

The ICIJ writes: “He stated that ‘the Buffalo deal is now officially closed.’

“A copy of a letter to be sent to the Egyptian Ministry of Defense listed a number of technical problems on the plane to justify the cancellation.” Cartel boss Christy Kinahan tried to buy a fleet of Egyptian military aircraft, leaked files show
