Cate Blanchett, Steven Spielberg and Kirsty Young join Desert Island Discs

Cate Blanchett, Steven Spielberg and Kirsty Young will appear on Desert Island Discs in a series of festival specials.

The three guests will share eight audio recordings, books and luxuries they would take with them if abandoned on a deserted island with presenter Lauren Laverne over Christmas as BBC Radio 4 marks their birthday. its 80th anniversary.

Australian actress Blanchett will recall, in her episode, growing up in Melbourne and her rise to fame in the 1998 film Elizabeth, where she played the Virgin Queen.

The 53-year-old actress also talked about her acting career with two Academy Awards, three Bafta Awards and three Golden Globe Awards, along with roles in films like Carol and Blue Jasmine.

Meanwhile, Spielberg, 75, talks about his childhood small films and his first big break as a director with the 1971 truck chase drama Duel.

He also examines why he finds a young person’s perspective important in ET, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, The BFG and most recently The Fabelmans.

The one left out on Christmas Day will be Young, who hosted the Desert Island Disc from 2006 to 2018 when ill health forced her to resign.

The former Crimewatch presenter recently presented the Queen’s state funeral and part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations on the BBC.

Young shares her feelings on her closing words on the BBC at the monarch’s funeral at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, her career in Scotland and elsewhere before talking about going on her own deported nearly 500 people.

The 54-year-old broadcaster said: “It was a bit of a confusing experience and completely enjoyable.

“Though forcing anyone to shrink their favorite discs down to just eight really makes no sense. It will never catch up.”

Festive Desert Island Discs, on Radio 4 on Sunday, will see Blanchett on December 11, Spielberg on December 18 and Young on December 25.
