Gardaí seized several documents after searching the home of former Irish hockey star Catriona Carey, who is being investigated for fraud.

Killers from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) and the Carlow/Kilkenny division conducted a search of a residence in present-day Co Kilkenny.

“Several items and documents were seized during this search. No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing,” a Garda statement said.

It comes as a recent RTÉ Investigates documentary highlights how some people in financial difficulty claim to have given businesswoman Kilkenny thousands of euros through a mortgage program offering to buy debt from people. their loans at a discounted price.

More than 200,000 euros deposited by desperate homeowners into a business account controlled by Catriona Carey is believed to have been spent on personal items and services, RTÉ Investigates reported.

Over two years, approximately €400,000 from Careysfort Asset Estates customers has been paid into the company account and as of last month, there was only €488.10 remaining, with nothing left to return to anyone who deposited funds in. Catriona Carey’s company.

Carey was found guilty of fraud in February 2020 after altering a check she received from a client who employed her as an accountant. She made a check for €6,948 for herself and cashed it at a bank in Kilkenny.

She received an eight-month suspended prison sentence.

Now, gardaí is investigating allegations she participated in a mortgage scam that may have affected at least 18 people.

Carey is trained as an accountant and is a director and owner of Careysfort Asset Estates Ltd, a company registered in the UK.

Through this company, she claims that she can help people in financial difficulty by clearing their debt and making it easier for them to stay in their homes by securing a new loan from Careysfort.

Carey wants a deposit up front, asking customers to be between 10pc and 30pc of the proposed new loan. However, many transactions never materialized and they did not receive their deposit back.
