Cavan Seal returns to Division Three in style with an impressive win over Waterford

The script held up well at Kingspan Breffni as Cavan easily secured his spot in the NFL Division Four League playoff.

The host hit the jackpot for the first time in the 17thth minute with a goal from Thomas Galligan and never looked like a slip.

Outstanding goalkeeper Raymond Galligan shot in the 10th minuteth minute to give the hosts a 3-0 to 2-0 lead and they stayed on easy street after that.

The Déise played against the wind in the first half and apart from an early brace from star attacker Tom O’Connell, they failed to unduly harass the Cavan defence.

The guests were in great difficulty after Thomas Galligan had brought the league leaders 1:5 to 0:2 from a tight angle (17th).

Waterford created a scoring chance himself in the 28th gameth minute, but David Hallihan fired his attempt wide.

Cavan should have scored a second just two minutes before the break, but Padraig Faulkner turned the ball wide under pressure from point-blank range.

Cavan looked to cement his 1-10-0-4 halftime lead in perfect conditions but it was Waterford’s Jason Curry who scored the first point of the second half in the 39th Minute.

The Munster side worked hard to put Cavan ahead but Cavan kept his focus and increased the pressure, with talisman Gearóid McKiernan showing off particularly well.

Cavan led 1-18 to 0-8 when Waterford keeper Hunt made a great save to deny McKiernan a goal.

However, Waterford couldn’t stop the Ulstermen from scoring again in the 68th minute when Caoimhín O’Reilly scored with a terrific finish.

Cavan booked his place in the third division with some panache when McKiernan fired a rocket high into the Waterford net in the dying seconds.
