Messi joined the French giants last summer after disastrous financial management FC Barcelona meant the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner had to leave league Titans after 21 years in the books. Things haven’t quite gone according to plan in Paris as the Argentine has only had two goals in Ligue 1 so far.
PSG’s recent departure from the Champions Leaguein the hands of Messi’s old rivals real Madrid no less sparked a wave of backlash from the club’s fans since he is on the European stage Mauricio Pochettinos side are mainly judged. They are currently 12 points ahead league 1 table, but it’s against teams across the continent where their skills will really be tested.
The loss to Real Madrid was followed by a home game in Ligue 1 against Bordeaux, where Messi was one of several stars ridiculed by his own fans. He was booed while standing next to team-mate Neymar – also in the line of fire to prepare for a free-kick.
Fabregas played alongside Messi at the Camp Nou for three seasons during which time the Spaniard was sneered at by Barca fans. Nowadays he also plies his trade in Ligue 1 with Monaco and has criticized PSG supporters for their behavior towards his former team-mate.
“They justify that they are paid a lot, they lost to Real Madrid, that’s fine, but didn’t they want to win? That comes first,” said Fabregas MARKA. “They haven’t won anything with PSG at the moment, but they will certainly win the league.
“You’re talking about a player [Messi] who just arrived. PSG have never had such a player in their life. It is better to be thankful, to support him and not to crush him. This year or next these guys will give you great moments.”
Fabregas went on to explain how it felt for him to be ridiculed by his own fans during his second spell at Barcelona. “I was whistled at at the Camp Nou,” he explained. “I know what happened to PSG. The fans want to create a moment of excitement with the players.
“During the game they support you when they sing your name, perfect, but what I saw recently, sneering when Neymar lost the ball or whistling when they touched the ball is very ugly.”
