Oscars: Will Smith slams Chris Rock after joking about Jada

Will Smith could potentially be asked to return his Oscar as backlash over his violent outburst mounts.

The 53-year-old actor was nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Serena and Venus Williams’ father, Richard, in the critically acclaimed drama King Richard.

He won the gong, beating out stiff competition from Benedict Cumberbatch, Javier Bardem, Denzel Washington and Andrew Garfield, but his victory was overshadowed by his attack on presenter Chris Rock earlier in the evening.

Will stormed the stage after the comedian poked fun at his wife Jada Pinkett’s hair loss, and the celebrity audience fell silent as they saw the actor slap Chris in the face.

He berated the prankster as he left the stage, telling him to “keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” and later apologized for his angry outburst during his speech while accepting his first-ever Oscar.

Many are now calling for Will to strip his Oscar and backlash is growing.

“The Academy should revoke Will Smith’s Oscar. Chris Rock made a mild joke and didn’t deserve to be attacked for it. There is never an excuse for physical assault,” one ranted.

“I hope @TheAcademy decides to revoke Will Smith’s Oscar win. Showing on national TV that you can attack someone and still be rewarded with no repercussions is disgusting,” tweeted another.

“Honestly, revoke #WillSmith’s Oscar and ban him from attending. I don’t care how good your acting is, that doesn’t give you the right to attack you. #WillAndChris,” one viewer fired.

“The Academy must make a statement that the violence perpetrated by Will Smith on their stage is unacceptable and deplorable and then they must revoke his Oscar,” added another.

“So Will Smith doesn’t get any consequences for this? He attacked someone live on TV. Arrest this man and strip him of his Oscar,” one raged.

Will is unlikely to have his Oscar stripped, but a source told the New York Post that the academy has serious questions about his win following the shocking attack.

“It’s basically assault. Everyone was just so shocked in the room, it was so uncomfortable,” they said. “I don’t think Will would want to give his Oscar back, but who knows what will happen now.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been asked for comment.
