CHAOS appears to have erupted on Twitter and in his offices after Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to his staff.
RIPTwitter was trending on the site amid fears it would shut down after the deadline Musk gave his employees.
Musk, whose recent acquisition of Twitter has already prompted notable changes within the company, issued an ultimatum that has reportedly led to mass layoffs.
The New York Times reported that staff were given until 5 p.m. Thursday to respond to his request.
Hundreds of employees reportedly rejected the ultimatum just weeks after about half of the company’s 7,500 employees were laid off following Musk’s takeover.
The strike by the remaining employees is likely to affect Twitter’s ability to do business, The Washington Post reports.
Musk delivered the ultimatum via email, reportedly telling the remaining Twitter staff that they must fully commit to an “extremely tough” approach in order to move forward.
“If you’re sure you want to be a part of the new Twitter, please click the link below,” it says.
Musk apparently intends to get his new Twitter hires to work as hard as possible on the rest of the details he included in that company-wide email, The Washington Post reported.
He said extremely hard tweeting involves “working long hours at high intensity,” and that excellence deserves a good grade.
“Only exceptional performance constitutes a passing grade,” Musk reportedly wrote.
Reported resignations have sparked fears that the social media site will be shut down, along with an announcement from Musk that Twitter offices will be closed through Monday and badge access will be suspended.
The Post reports that employees who chose to reject the ultimatum will receive three months’ severance pay.
Anonymously speaking employees told the outlet that many colleagues said goodbye on the company’s Slack channels on Thursday.
As users flooded the site with “goodbye” in anticipation of a possible “collapse,” Musk tweeted throughout the evening.
“We just hit another all time high in Twitter usage lol,” he tweeted just after 11pm ET.
Musk’s tweets included a meme depicting Twitter’s death and funeral.
Twitter users continued to tweet Musk, asking questions about the future of the app.
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, tweeted: “What do people mean when they say Twitter is going down? Doesn’t it sort itself out somehow? I have a feeling engineers are for changes to not just keep it running? I do not know anything. Hey @elonmusk
Do you want to make a twitter space with me? I’m confused.”
Musk replied, “The best people stay, so I’m not overly concerned.”
As the social media site exploded with memes and goodbyes, a projection was spotted on the headquarters.
A video shared by Twitter headquarters on social media shows a projection of Musk’s name followed by a variety of rude phrases, including “parasite supreme,” “worthless billionaire,” and “bankrupt baby.”
The hashtag #RIPTwitter also started trending.
“It has been my pleasure to tweet with all of you for the past 13 years. #RIPTwitter,” one person wrote.
“I’m looking back at my three followers one last time since Twitter took down #RIPTwitter #TwitterDown,” said another.
“Ugh, end of an era. #RIPTwitter,” said another.
Even celebs have jumped on the trend and sent out a possible graduation tweet.
“If the end is here let me say I enjoyed our good mornings and was honored to be the Andy who had @Andy #RIPTwitter,” wrote Andy Cohen.
