Charlie Bird’s Friends and Colleagues Record Charity Single ‘Shine a Light’ Before Climbing Croagh Patrick
A special charity single was released ahead of Charlie Bird and Vicky Phelan’s Croagh Patrick fundraiser on April 2.
last year, former RTÉ journalist Charlie Bird and his friend, Mrs Phelan, announced that they would be taking on the Mayo pilgrimage challenge, to raise much-needed funds for the Motor Neuropathy Association of Ireland (MND). ) and House of Pieta.
Now that singer Michael English, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and a choir, friends and colleagues of Mr Bird have joined forces to record the new charity single ‘Shine a Light’.
The song was composed by Sara Noone and Michael English backed with vocals by Joe Duffy, Eileen Dunne, George Lee and many others.
Sharing details of the single on Twitter, Mr Bird wrote: “Shine A Light”, this wonderful song was written especially for me by Sara Noone and sung by Michael English with the RTÉ Orchestra and some colleagues. My RTE. I want to share this dedication with Vicky Phelan being a true beacon of hope. Always keep your arms wide open. “

Mr Bird was diagnosed with a motor disorder last year and he has pledged to climb Ireland’s holiest mountain to raise awareness for terminally ill people and mental health struggles. .

He had originally planned to take on the challenge with his friend Vicky Phelan, but last week the women’s health advocate, who has had cancer for a while, said she was no longer well enough to go.

In a statement posted on the page, Mr Bird said: “Join me in moral support on April 2 as I raise funds for two charities that are very close to my heart – the Motor Neuropathy Association. Ireland and Pieta, Ireland’s national suicide prevention charity, I hope that people across Ireland, indeed around the world, will stand behind me to show support and solidarity to the thousands climbers every day because of their physical and mental health challenges.
“I encourage anyone who wants to participate in ‘Climb with Charlie’ to do so in their own area. Due to health and safety restrictions and an ongoing conservation project, we are limited in the number of people who will climb Croagh Patrick that day, But it would be great if you could go Walk or hike with me on April 2. This act of solidarity will be greatly appreciated by me, my family and friends.”
