Charlie Chaplin saw himself in Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky

Stallone told GQ that, shortly after the release of “Rocky,” he received a letter from one of the most famous silent comedians in the world, Charlie Chaplin. The actor couldn’t believe that someone of Chaplin’s status would contact him, but the two had more in common than Stalin realized at the time. According to Sly, Chaplin wrote, “Rocky reminds me of a little character I used to play.”

Back in 1915, silent films captured the underdog, and Chaplin played a role like no other. In his classic “The Champion,” Chaplin is an exhausted, struggling man fighting to get to the top of the boxing world. When the silent movie star watched “Rocky,” he couldn’t help but compare the two characters, and for good reason.

Both Rocky and Chaplin’s Champ began their journey at the bottom. Rocky does small wars for small amounts and breaks the leg of a small $20 loan shark here and there. Champ is unemployed, wearing ragged, dirty clothes and has no last food left. Both men had the opportunity to fight a heavyweight boxer for extra money, and both men won the gig. Both films feature training scenes with a demanding mentor, a shy lover, a loyal canine friend, and a dramatic ending battle.

Unlike the dramatic “Rocky,” Chaplin’s underdog story is full of humor and humour, but the characters are very similar. Both are struggling to survive financially, looking for opportunities for greatness, and determined to prove themselves worthy.
