The Chase team hit the jackpot as The Beast ‘quit’

The Chase contestants went home with an impressive jackpot prize and a heated final round with Mark Labbett at the end of Friday’s ITV show.

A team consisting of Rebecca, 40, Philippa, 19, Joel, 34, and Paul, 57, competed against professional quizzer Mark Labbett, or The Beast, in the final nail-biting run for a cash prize.

While Paul didn’t make it to the final, his three team-mates took in £17,000 which they split amongst themselves at the end of the programme.

The final was a tense showdown as Mark faced catching the team in 20 questions, but when he got a number of questions wrong and seemed to grip the tension, he was pushed back by his opponents and ultimately failed to catch them .

At the end of the show, he said, “I have to take my beatings like a man. Well played, you absolutely deserved to win. Well played.”

Host Bradley Walsh said: “Well deserved and the chaser takes it on the chin. Rebecca, Philippa and Joel go home with £17,000 See? It can be done. Even the beast can be defeated.”

But during the hard-fought showdown, many viewers took to Twitter to say The Beast appeared to have “collapsed” under the pressure.

One described him as a “mess”, another wrote: “Mark has a mare here hahaha. Spurs win a European final hahahahahahahah that will be the day.”

Another tweeted: “He gave up. Won’t be surprised if he crashes,” as another said, “Aww the chaser crumbled.”

Another social media user wrote, “Beastie gave up,” while another said, “What a stinker for Mark,” and a third wrote, “What a spanking.

Another fan concluded: “What a spanking for the beast. He wasn’t even close. Don’t see that often. Well played, team.”

Several fans of the nightly ITV game show took to Twitter to congratulate them on the surprise win, with one writing: “These are a lucky team. Well done Joel, Philippa, Rebecca.”

This comes after viewers were distracted by the age of one of the contestants earlier on The Chase during Friday’s episode.

As the show began and the contestants introduced themselves to host Bradley Walsh, many viewers took to Twitter to discuss whether contestant Joel looked his age.

While one wrote: “34?! Paul looks much younger!!!!” Other viewers thought Joel looked wise beyond his years, with another writing, “This guy could be any age from 30 to 70.”

Another wrote: “Does anyone else think Joel looks older than 34?” as another cheekily said, “Haven’t the years been kind to him when he’s only 34?”
