Chat in the lost box is full of spammers with no friends, begging for ‘more’

If you have managed to bypass the login queue because the Lost beer keg lately, you will surely see waves when the waves spammers “add me” in worldwide chat. So what’s all about this? What caused the sudden increase in spam appearing everywhere from Pirdeholme to the wide seas?

Well, it’s not just a meme, believe it or not. It turns out that when you have a total of 50 friends in Lost Ark, you will be sent 1000 pieces of amethyst crystal – a valuable currency that can be traded for an extremely valuable cosmetic set that includes pets, glyphs for your boat, and exclusive mounts. While 1000 crystal shards isn’t nearly enough to get you any of those prizes, the allure of the free loot has enraged the player base.

This craze then spiraled out of control, as the players’ original intention to fortify their friends list with the help of the community turned into a vibrant movement. It also becomes a running gag across major cities, vast oceans, and island events, where players focus on their dozen. Everywhere you go, calls to add me often dominate the conversation with offers in return.

This in turn has created a force against me consisting of people frustrated with the tide of spam in the game. While still pale in comparison to people desperate for friends, you can sometimes see anger flare up between spammers and extra groups I visit. As a result, regional chat has become relatively unwieldy towards the end of the year while these two go head to head.
