Many families across the UK are looking to cut back Energy bill before prices rose in April.

Management agency Ofgem has announced its price cap would increase by 54%, bringing the average household energy bill to £1,971 per year.

Prices are also expected to increase further in October 2022 when the price cap changes again.

To help lower your bills, laundry expert and Laundryheap CEO Deyan Dimitrov shared seven smart washing machines tricks to reduce energy consumption.

This also includes the best time to do your laundry to reduce bills.

Run your machine late at night or early in the morning

Colder wash and dry cycles save more energy

Running the washer or tumble dryer at certain times of the day will add to your energy bill if you’re on a Save 7 rate.

4-7pm is arguably the most expensive time to wash or dry your clothes, as increased demand during these hours can make electricity more expensive depending on your tariff.

On the other hand, energy prices will be at their lowest between 10pm and 5am. So please try to use your machines during this time. However, make sure you follow through fire Safety instructions and never put heavy then go to bed overnight.

Similarly, if you need to dry your clothes during the day, the length of the drying cycle can also save you money.

For example, if you transfer the load while the dryer is still warm from the previous cycle, you can preserve the remaining heat inside the dryer for the next load of clothes. This will then help shorten your drying time.

Colder cycles are better

Washing clothes at a colder temperature in less time can make your machine more energy efficient. For example, a 30-degree cycle can cut a washing machine’s energy use in half compared to a 40 to 60-degree cycle.

It’s also more cost-effective to use hot laundry detergent for bedding, towels, and sportswear that are more likely to harbor bacteria. You can save even more by using the eco setting on your washing machine, if available.

For drying, the cooling cycle can be longer, but it consumes much less energy and you’ll also be less likely to over-dry your clothes – if your clothes are warm to the touch , they have also entered the Long.

Wash large items, but do not pack too much

It is more efficient to wash more clothes, but an overloaded washer or dryer may not wash or dry your clothes properly. So make sure to fill the appropriate load for your machine.

A good tip to make sure your machine is running as efficiently as possible is to check if you can touch the rim of the basin after filling the washer or dryer.

If you can’t fit your hands between clothes, this means your machine is packed too full.

Also, make sure you untangle your clothes before putting them in the washer or dryer, as smaller items can get caught in larger pieces of clothing, resulting in them not being washed properly. Wash or dry properly.

Maintain your machinery

Clean your machine every three months to ensure it is in top condition.

To clean, you can pour two cups of white vinegar into your machine’s detergent drawer and run it on the hottest cycle. After the first cycle, add half a cup of baking soda directly to the pot and run the hot cycle again.

Another option is to run a hot cycle with a limesc-removal product. This helps to remove any build-up that could affect your computer’s performance.

As for your dryer, clean its lint filter as often as possible after each cycle. Lint and hair build-up – even in one cycle – can prevent your machine from properly drying large, dense items.

Use bio-capsules to remove stains more effectively

Bio tablets or biological detergents are most suitable if you want to wash your clothes at a lower temperature. These products have enzymes that can be activated at lower temperatures, so they will better break down stains and stains on your clothes during a colder wash.

However, it’s also important to note that non-biological detergents – while not entirely suitable for cold washes – have less harsh enzymes, making them a better choice for sensitive skin.

The dryer ball is a good investment

Using a wool or rubber dryer ball helps separate your clothes and increases exposure to the airflow during the dryer’s cycle. This reduces drying time and the time your dryer needs to run, saving you energy.

Wool balls can even absorb some of the moisture in your machine, reducing drying time even more.

Let dry when possible
