WHATSAPP is one of the most private messaging services in the world and protects your texts from snoopers with end-to-end encryption.
It’s important to ensure that encryption is turned on so hackers can’t spy on your texts in transit.
If an unencrypted message is remotely intercepted while being sent, it is visible to a hacker in plain text.
But an encrypted message would be completely muddled and impossible to translate.
WhatsApp makes it so that only the sender and the recipient have the digital key needed to read the message.
And every new conversation with another person generates a new key phrase.
“End-to-end encrypted chats have their own security code that is used to verify that the calls and the messages you send to that chat are end-to-end encrypted,” WhatsApp said.
“You can find this code on the contact info screen, both as a QR code and as a 60-digit number.
“These codes are unique to each chat and can be compared between people in each chat to verify that the messages you send to the chat are end-to-end encrypted.
“Security codes are just visible versions of the special key you share – and don’t worry, it’s not the actual key itself that’s always kept secret.”

How to check if your WhatsApp texts are encrypted
To check end-to-end encryption, open your chat with someone, then tap their name.
This will open the Contact Info screen where you can then select Encryption.
You will see a QR code and a 60-digit number.
When you are physically with the other person, one of you can scan the other’s QR code.
Alternatively, you can compare the number visually on the screen.
If you use the scan method, a green tick will appear to confirm encryption.
This “match” means no one can intercept your messages or calls.
If you are far from someone, you can just send them the 60-digit number to confirm.
Unencrypted chats can mean that you are using a hacked version of WhatsApp, verifying that a chat with someone is not encrypted due to outdated software, or that your phone has been compromised.
