crumbs! Cheesecake has been crowned the country’s favorite tea-time treat, with a surprising result.

As the country prepares for the Queen’s platinum jubilee, a study has revealed that the baking world’s maverick has pushed traditional Victoria sponge cake into third place and chocolate cake into second place.

The survey of 2,000 Brits found that classics like fruitcake, battenberg and red velvet gave way to modern favorites like brownies and donuts, which made the top 10.

The recently arrived millionaire’s shortbread, retro casseroles, Black Forest cake and jam roll, and fine coffee and walnut cake all made the top 20.

According to the study, Brits bake at home once a month on average, and nearly four in 10 plan to rustle a Victoria sponge cake to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend, while one in five choose a vegan option.

The nation has a soft spot for cake, with adults scoffing at an average of 72 servings a year.

Special occasions like birthdays, weddings and anniversaries were the most popular times to eat cake.

Four in 10 also cut off a piece when craving a sweet treat, and more than a third gobbled it up for sheer enjoyment.

The study by Dr. Oetker Baking found that four in ten cake fans rated English breakfast tea as the best drink to serve with treats, a third preferred coffee and almost two in ten drank hot chocolate.

Jen Brown, Cake Manager at Dr. Oetker says: “Baking is great fun, and you don’t have to be an expert to get creative in the kitchen.

“Something like a Victoria sponge or anniversary-themed cupcakes are a great place to start – both are simple but effective and make a wonderful way to pay tribute to the Queen.

“They’re also ideal baked goods to bake with friends or family, or just as an activity to enjoy on your own, a little me time.”
