Chelsea appear to mock Brighton with Marc Cucurella transfer announcement

Chelsea appeared to mock Brighton after announcing the £62million signing of defender Marc Cucurella.

After Brighton dismissed “inaccurate reports” that the club had reached an agreement to sell Cucurella on Wednesday, Chelsea appeared to duplicate their statement in a near-identical tweet announcing the Spanish defender’s transfer just two days later.

Brighton confirmed Cucurella had left the club in a club record while also announcing the loan of highly-rated Chelsea prospect Levi Colwill.

Reports on Wednesday suggested Chelsea had agreed a fee of around £53million for Cucurella, with Colwill leaving Stamford Bridge on a permanent transfer.

Brighton have refuted those reports after the club refused to back away from their asking price when Manchester City were interested in the 24-year-old left-back, instead promising a fee that would rise to over £60m with certain add-ons is hit.

Brighton signed Cucurella for around £15million last summer and were their player of the season in his first year with the Premier League club.

“We didn’t want to lose Marc but he wanted the opportunity to play in the Champions League to speed up his promotion to Spain’s World Cup squad,” said Brighton manager Graham Potter.

“Of course we are disappointed that Marc is leaving, but we wish him all the best for the future. He has had a superb first season in the Premier League, deservedly winning our two Player of the Season awards and has been an absolute pleasure to work with over the past 12 months.”

Cucurella said: “I’m really happy. It’s a great opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I will work hard to be happy here and to help the team.” Chelsea appear to mock Brighton with Marc Cucurella transfer announcement
