Tuchel makes a scathing assessment of Chelsea’s Champions League hopes

Antonio Rudiger has been slammed for his part in Real Madrid’s third goal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has accused the defender of not wanting to “hurt himself” as he headed for the ball after Edouard Mendy’s undershoot pass before Karim Benzema’s hat-trick goal went into an empty net. The Chelsea The goalkeeper has also received his fair share of criticism for the goal he has been compared to Liverpool Goalkeeper Loris Karius.

And the Blues boss has admitted he made a tactical mistake as his side suffered defeat in the first leg Champions League bind with real Madrid.

Rüdiger struck

Gabriel Agbonlahor has accused Antonio Rudiger of not wanting to ‘injure’ himself ahead of Real Madrid’s first goal because ‘he has a move ready’.

Rudiger’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with a move to one of Europe’s top clubs like Real Madrid. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be interested in the player. But Ruediger was denied by an underfoot pass from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, allowing Karim Benzema to steal the ball and fit it into an empty goal to seal his hat-trick and a 3-1 win for Los Blancos.

And Agbonlahor has settled on the defender for his performance during the game.

Mendy versus Karius

Spanish media have compared Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to Liverpool stopper Loris Karius after his Champions League mistake against Real Madrid.

Mendy’s underperforming pass early in the second half resulted in Benzema scoring for Madrid, with Spanish newspaper AS comparing the incident to Karius’ error in the 2018 Champions League final. On that occasion, Benzema also scored when he turned a save from the German into the Liverpool net.

And the report claims Benzema has “another victim on his resume” after the Stamford Bridge clash.

Tuchel admits mistakes

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted he made a tactical error in the 3-1 Champions League defeat by Real Madrid.

The German admitted he was partly to blame for how he set up his team defensively for the crunch draw. Andreas Christensen struggled to deal with Vinicius Jr during the tie and Tuchel said he changed his formation to try to “turn things around”.

And he admitted his side haven’t looked the same since the international break linked to Brentford’s 4-1 win.
