Roman Abramovich added to UK sanctions list

The intervention of Russian President Vladimir Putin has ensured Chelsea’s Champions League match against Lille will be available to watch on domestic TV.

It comes after the Stamford Bridge side were plunged into turmoil after the British government imposed sanctions on club owner Roman Abramovich, meaning the Blues had to operate on a reduced budget and cannot buy or sell players, negotiate new contracts or sell any merchandise. Sanctions were imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine when Abramovich’s relationship with the Russian president came into the spotlight.

But the club have been accused of failing to “understand the gravity of the situation they are in” after their claim FA Cup the match against Middlesbrough was played behind closed doors. And Roman Abramovich’s private plane has landed Russia after he was discovered for the first time in a month at an airport in Israel.

Abramovich’s jet arrives in Russia

Roman Abramovich’s private jet has landed in Russia hours after the Chelsea boss was seen waiting in a VIP lounge at an airport in Israel.

Abramovich put Chelsea for sale before being sanctioned by the UK government for alleged ties to the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian billionaire has denied all ties to Putin and has yet to confirm whether he was on the flight to Moscow.

Abramovich was seen for the first time after a month waiting for his private jet in Tel Aviv, Israel, before it arrived in Istanbul, Turkey. Reuters reports that the Chelsea owner has no plans to meet Putin in Moscow, while a spokesman for Abramovich declined the news agency’s request for comment.

Chelsea slams

Chelsea have been charged after demanding to play an FA Cup draw with Middlesbrough behind closed doors for “sporting integrity”.

The Blues had hoped to play a match without fans due to the inability to sell tickets because of sanctions imposed on owner Roman Abramovich. But their request to do so was met with criticism from Middlesbrough, who labeled the request “bizarre and without merit”.

And Politico reportedly was told by a senior government source that the statement “shows they don’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation they are in”.

Draw Lille will be shown in Russia

Vladimir Putin’s intervention has secured Chelsea Champions League The match against Lille will be shown on Russian television.

Putin has issued a presidential decree that means Match TV can be set up and the channel holds the rights to the Champions League in Russia. And since UEFA did not suspend broadcasting contracts in Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, all European ties this week will continue to be broadcast on the channel as scheduled.

That means football fans in Russia will be able to tune in when Thomas Tuchel’s side take on Lille in the second leg of the round of 16 after a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
