Chelsea confirm on May 7 that the Boehly consortium have signed an agreement to buy the club for £4.25bn

Potential new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was given an early welcome to the club by one of the club’s sponsors.

Hotel and accommodation search engine Trivago, the sponsor of the Stamford Bridge team’s training shirt, posted a message on social media welcoming the American billionaire to Chelsea – despite the fact that the takeover is still ongoing. But there is a simple explanation for the news that broke on social media on Tuesday.

It comes as the Premier League is set to give its approval of the takeover led by Boehly. And Ben Chilwell has made an emotional return to training after six months battling a horrific anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Boehly welcomes Chelsea

Chelsea sponsor Trivago accidentally welcomed potential owner Todd Boehly to the club a little too soon.

US magnate Todd Boehly has completed a £4.25billion deal to buy the Stamford Bridge club, but the sale must be completed by May 31 when Chelsea’s temporary state trading license expires. And training shirt sponsor Trivago gave a hasty welcome to Boehly at Stamford Bridge, with the takeover still ongoing.

The hotel and accommodation search engine tweeted on Tuesday: “Welcome to the @ChelseaFC family Todd Boehly! #LetsGo.” But the message appears to have been a simple planning error.

Premier League to give approval

Todd Boehly’s takeover bid for Chelsea will receive Premier League approval despite one key detail of the sale yet to be agreed.

Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Boehly has won the race to buy the Blues and is now only the Premier League and government away from ending Roman Abramovich’s 19-year tenure at Stamford Bridge. There is a major problem with a £1.5 billion loan that has not been repaid and Abramovich has said he would like the proceeds to go to a humanitarian organization helping victims of the Ukraine war but the government has major concerns about the terms of the deal.

With the acquisition due to be completed by May 31, the Premier League has already conducted some background checks on Boehly ahead of the Owners and Directors’ Test and is ready to approve the purchase.

Chilwell returns to training

Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell made an emotional return to training after fighting his way back from a horror injury.

The England international has been out for six months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the Blues’ Champions League triumph against Juventus in November. Chilwell has now received applause from his team-mates in footage shared by Chelsea and shared hugs with Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta and manager Thomas Tuchel as he reported back to duty.
