Just one Chelsea Player who started against real Madrid earned a rating of six in French newspaper L’Equipe after the Blues played outside the park at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel’s team is staring at the exit from the run Champions League in the quarterfinals afterwards lost the first leg 3-1 on Wednesday evening. Karim Benzema was the Whites’ hero and scored a stunning 25-minute hat-trick to make it back to back heights on the European stage.

The French striker didn’t give Edouard Mendy a chance with two superb header goals in the first half Kai Havertz pulled one back for the hosts. Mendy’s Howler right after half-time, however, handed Benzema a simple tap-in to complete his hat-trick and restore the two-goal lead Real Madrid will take in next Tuesday’s second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Very few Men in Blue were able to keep their heads up as the referee ended the action in west London and that was reflected in their ratings in Thursday’s edition of L’Equipe. The Paris-based outlet is notoriously tough, having made just 13 10/10 appearances in its history, with Benzema scoring just nine despite his three-goal display.

Christian Pulisic received the worst mark of any player on the pitch with two goals, while four players – Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Andreas Christensen – recorded three goals. There was a slight improvement further up the pitch as Jorginho – who assisted Havertz’s goal – received a five, as did Reece James and Mason Mount.

Havertz received a six, the highest mark of any Chelsea player, thanks to his header in the 40th minute. However, things were bleak for captain Cesar Azpilicueta and N’Golo Kante, who only managed ratings of four, which was the average score for Chelsea’s starting XI.

In contrast, Real Madrid scored an average of 6.5, with Benzema at the top and Federico Valverde, Casemiro, David Alaba and Thibaut Courtois scoring a seven. There were plenty of sixes, with satisfactory performances from Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy.

Toni Kroos and Eder Militao may be a little annoyed by the 5-point mark, although the latter saw an early yellow card and struggled with hitting throughout the game. Vinicius and Modric may also be wondering why they only managed a six-score despite assisting Benzema’s first two goals.

The Brazilian winger was particularly dangerous throughout the game, giving James and Christensen a hot time on Chelsea’s right flank. As a blues boss Tuchel remarked after the gamehis side need to improve drastically ahead of the second leg to avoid being ‘hammered’ in the Spanish capital.
