Cherished watch returned to Sussex owners after seven years

A MAN has been reunited with a watch that belonged to his grandfather… seven years after it was stolen.

The watch had been given to Paul’s grandfather, Leonard King, for helping a Maidstone Borough Police officer arrest two violent prisoners on Boxing Day 1925.

The Battle couple reported the break-in to police, but the case was filed after an investigation found no viable leads.

A few years later the watch turned up at a flea market in the village of Ford, near Littlehampton, where it was purchased. It changed hands again after being listed on eBay.

The bidder, who wished to remain anonymous, discovered the listing and did some research after reading the watch’s personalized plaque and was concerned that such a personal possession would not have been lawfully sold.

After doing some research, he found an article in The Argus about the burglary and contacted Sussex Police. Hastings CID detectives then contacted Paul and Annette to let them know the watch had been found.

Paul said: “I was absolutely amazed and delighted. I never expected to see it again.

“I am so grateful to the finder for letting me have his purchase fee on the condition only that he can donate it to a fire department charity fund as he was a former metropolitan firefighter who retired a few years ago .”

Detective Sergeant Chris Milner said he was “delighted” to be able to reunite the watch with Paul.

He said: “It also demonstrates the vital importance of policing measures, such as listing items on property databases and publicizing such crimes in the media in the hope that one day they will be identified and returned.”
