Cheteshwar Pujara takes over the captaincy of Sussex and reaches Lord’s Century

Indian star Cheteshwar Pujara scored another century on the day he took over as Sussex captain.

Pujara is temporarily in charge while Tom Haines recovers from a broken hand.

Haines is likely to miss around six weeks, including the Royal London Cup.

Pujara leads the team in place of Steven Finn against Middlesex at Lord’s.

He lost his first pitch, but centuries before the assistant skipper himself, and Tom Alsop put the county first after they were surprisingly asked to bat first in temperatures of around 40C.

Sussex head coach Ian Salisbury said: “Puj was keen to move up in Tom’s absence.

“He sees the potential in this team and has been a natural leader since joining.

“Finny has done an excellent job for us following Tom’s injury and will remain the leader among our bowlers.

“By having a batsman fill the role, Finn can focus on leading our attack.

“Puj is an extremely experienced and highly qualified person who I know will do a fantastic job.”

Finn took charge of the draw against Leicestershire last week after Haines had to retire on day one.

But the former England bowler could watch from the pavilion at his old home pitch yesterday as Pujara (125 not out) and Alsop (135) shared a third wicket count of 219 in Sussex 328-4.

Sussex batting coach Grant Flower said: “Chet is used to the heat, Tom not so much, but his fitness has taken hold and he’s made some really good decisions under pressure.

“It’s going to be really important how we bowl with this new ball.”

It was Alsop’s second century in three innings and Pujara’s fifth in his last nine. Cheteshwar Pujara takes over the captaincy of Sussex and reaches Lord’s Century
