Chichester MP excludes itself from competition to be next PM

A SUSSEX MP has ruled herself out of the Conservative leadership contest after speculation she was preparing to run as a candidate for the post of next Prime Minister.

Gillian Keegan, MP for Chichester, had been touted as a possible candidate in the race to succeed Boris Johnson, but said she was “really proud” to support former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to lead the party.

Ms Keegan said: “Serious times call for serious people. Rishi has proven he can deliver under pressure while supporting people and businesses across the country.

“We must carefully manage global inflation while examining the growth of our economy.

“I believe Rishi has the determination, discipline and integrity to lead our country to a bright future.”

She is the second Conservative MP in the county to back Mr Sunak as the next Prime Minister, with Health Secretary and MP for Lewes Maria Caulfield also backing his bid for the leadership.

Ms Caulfield said he was the “best candidate” to deliver for the country and tackle inflation.

Ten candidates are vying for the posts of party leader and prime minister, and Conservative MPs are preparing to cut the list down to just two. The final pair of candidates will be chosen by party members to decide who will succeed Boris Johnson.

Also in the running are Trade Secretary Penny Mordaunt, who was joined by Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell, former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Worthing West MP Sir Peter Bottomley and Sussex University alumni Kemi Badenoch , was supported.

Anyone running for office must secure the support of 20 Conservative MPs to advance to the first round of the leadership contest.

However, Gillingham MP Rehman Chishti – who previously ran as Labor candidate at Horsham in 2005 – is unlikely to reach that threshold as he currently has no support from his Conservative peers.

A new party leader and prime minister is expected to be announced on September 5.
