Chicken salad products sold in these states are being recalled for undeclared allergens

A company is recalling its chicken salad products because they may contain an undeclared allergen. The products were sold in several states.

The voluntary recall affects Albertsons Companies ReadyMeals Chicken Salad Quad and Chicken Salad Sandwich Club Tray, which may contain undeclared cashews, according to an announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.

The tree nut, which is an allergen, is not on the ingredients list. The company learned about the issue after receiving a report of a customer’s side effect.

“Consumers who have allergies or severe sensitivities to tree nuts (cashews) are at risk of experiencing serious or life-threatening allergic reactions when consuming these products and are urged not to consume these products,” the company noted. “These consumers should discard the products or return them to their local store for a full refund.”

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), nut allergies are among the most common food allergies. Along with peanuts and shellfish, tree nuts are also among the food allergens “most commonly” associated with anaphylaxis, a “potentially life-threatening reaction” that can send the body into shock.

“Cashew nut allergies are often associated with serious and even fatal complications,” noted Healthline. “It is important to understand the symptoms and risk factors of this allergy.”

While symptoms typically appear “within seconds” of exposure to the allergen, in some cases, while “rare,” they may not appear for hours. Someone suffering from anaphylaxis should seek medical attention immediately.

The ReadyMeals Chicken Salad Quad was sold in 12-oz clear plastic four-compartment containers and had the UPC code 21352400000. The Chicken Salad Sandwich Club 18-inch tray had the UPC 29615900000 and the products were in black trays of 16 sandwiches packed up.

The sell by date of both products expires Thursday.” Photos of the packaging are available on both the FDA and the company’s websites.

They were sold at Albertsons as well as Safeway stores in Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wyoming. If you have any questions, you can contact the company’s Customer Service Center at 1-877-723-3929.
