The cost of childcare increases for parents

Childcare costs for parents with children under the age of two have risen by more than £2,000 a year since 2010, according to a new study.

The TUC said nursery fees for children under two have increased by £185 a month since the Conservatives took office.

The average annual nursery bill for a family with a young child was £4,992 in 2010 but last year it was more than £7,200, the union organization said.

Britain now has some of the most expensive childcare fees in the developed world – and ministers are under mounting pressure to find a solution.

TUC chief Frances O’Grady said: “Childcare should be affordable for all, but parents are spending a large chunk of their wages on childcare while their wages have stagnated.

“This is putting enormous pressure on family budgets, while at the same time other living expenses are skyrocketing. New moms get caught in a catch 22.

“The low level of statutory maternity pay in the UK means many are under financial pressure to return to work early and are then at the mercy of sky-high childcare fees.

“We urgently need to ensure that wages rise so that households do not drown in bills.”

A previous union survey of working parents with preschool children found that one in three spends more than a third of their wages on childcare.

Childcare fees have “skyrocketed” while statutory maternity pay has fallen in value since 2010, the report says.
