Children celebrate in Lewes rite of passage Moving On Parade

At the annual rite of passage for Sussex students, they paraded through a town to celebrate graduation.

Children in Lewes said goodbye to their primary school years in joyful celebration on Friday 1st July.

Since July 2001, Year 6 children have paraded down Main Street in costume to mark the end of elementary school and the beginning of their adolescence at the Patina Parade.

Patina, which stands for Parents and Teachers In The Arts, is a charity founded at the beginning of the century by a group of parents and teachers in Lewes concerned that the arts were being given less prominence in the national curriculum than it deserved .

Each year it chooses a “moving theme” which it develops with the city’s children through a series of activities and presentations.

It organizes workshops in carnival arts in schools and works with artists to create a stunning moving flurry of sculpture, costumes and music that is the much-loved parade parade.

This year’s theme was Let’s Make Waves and celebrated the ecology, history and geography of the River Ouse and the sea and how these waterways shape life and support a wealth of species.

Children from 14 schools created a kaleidoscopic flow of color as they meandered through the city singing, dancing and playing musical instruments while family and friends lined the streets waving and cheering.

Carrie Whyte, Head Teacher at Lewes Old Grammar Junior School (Logs), which attends each year, said: “As always, it was an incredibly moving celebration for all the children and their families, marking a real moment in their childhood.

“Logs is always honored to be a part of this fantastic Lewes tradition which the children absolutely love.” Children celebrate in Lewes rite of passage Moving On Parade
