The children’s television show Peppa Pig has added a lesbian couple to its cast for the first time.
In episode 41 of Season 7, entitled Families, which aired Tuesday on Channel 5, Penny the polar bear introduced her two mothers.
In the scene, Peppa Pig and her classmates are asked by their teacher to sketch pictures of their families to put on their classroom wall.
It is each student’s turn to introduce the drawn family members and describe their occupations and characteristics.
Penny sketches a portrait of her family and draws two female polar bears in dresses.
As she draws, she says to her classmates, “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mom and my other mom.
“A mom is a doctor and a mom cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”
Teacher Madame Gazelle replies: “Lovely, Penny.”
Penny’s mothers are then shown at the end of the episode arriving with the other parents to pick up their children after school.
Many viewers took to social media to praise the decision to feature an LGBT+ family for the first time in the animated series’ history.
One Twitter user wrote: “This is how inclusion should be taught to young children.
“We don’t have to talk to them about sex. Easily view all types of families. You will understand the rest when it is appropriate.”

Another person tweeted, “An autistic character in Thomas the Tank Engine and a kid with two mothers in Peppa Pig…it was a good day for representation.”
The children’s television show Thomas & Friends, also shown on Channel 5, introduces its first autistic character, created in collaboration with autistic writers and organizations.
The character, dubbed Bruno the Brake Car, is voiced by nine-year-old autistic actor Elliott Garcia and will appear in future episodes of Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go! be visible. from 21 September at 7 a.m.
Peppa Pig first aired on Channel 5 Milkshake and Nick Jr. in 2004 and has since been available in more than 180 countries.
