The Chinese government has launched a nationwide investigation after illustrations described as “sexually suggestive” and pro-American were discovered in school textbooks.

The drawings were found in math textbooks used in China’s elementary schools for nearly a decade.

The illustrations have sparked widespread outcry in China’s internet community, with many condemning what they believe to be racist and sexualized depictions of Chinese children.

In an illustration of children playing a game, a boy has his hands on a girl’s chest while another is tugging at a girl’s skirt. Another image shows a girl’s underwear jumping a skipping rope.

The images have also been labeled “pro-US” by some online because they show several children wearing star-and-stripe-patterned clothing in the colors of the US flag, CNN reported.

The books have now been retired, and replacements must be in place by the fall

Additionally, an illustration featuring a misdesigned Chinese flag was labeled “anti-China.”

This has led to allegations against the creators of the drawings, with illustrator Wu Yong, whose studio designed the images, even being accused of working as a spy for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Many netizens have expressed dismay that the state-run People’s Education Press allowed the images to be published, blaming “Western cultural infiltration” and “foreign powers” for the illustrations.

The books have reportedly been in circulation since 2013.

In response to the public outrage, the People’s Education Press said Thursday it was and will be recalling all textbooks Redesign illustrations.

The Chinese Ministry of Education has also instructed the publisher to “correct and reform” its publications and ensure the revised versions are in circulation by the fall school year.

It also called for a “thorough inspection” of all textbooks to ensure they “conform to correct political directions and values, promote outstanding Chinese culture, and meet the aesthetic tastes of the public.”

Under President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government has banned all foreign educational materials to quash any educational influence from other nations. Xi says all teaching materials “must reflect the will of the party and the country.”
