Chris Pine on the “responsibility” of the military role in The Contractor

Chris Pine has spoken about the responsibility he felt while portraying a member of the military for his latest film role and the importance of shedding a light on the mental health issues returning service personnel can face.

n The Contractor, the Wonder Woman star plays a special forces sergeant who is involuntarily discharged from the army and forced to work for a private underground force to support his family.

The film looks at the problems soldiers can face when they return home, including high suicide rates, and Pine said it felt like “a huge problem”.

He told the PA news agency: “We talked about it a lot during filming… I think more soldiers die from self-inflicted gunshot wounds than on action and it’s very important to talk about it.

“I’m glad we addressed it in our film and we could have spent more time on it, but maybe it will at least get people thinking and asking a few questions.”

Pine also discussed how different the training and preparation for the role of a Soldier compares to other action roles.

He said: “You have a responsibility to the technical advice, you have a responsibility to the community because these are the people who use these techniques in life or death situations.

“I’m just a nerd on that too. I remember when I was a kid my mom gave me a barbie doll and I ripped her head off and turned it into a gun. So I love all the technical stuff and using the stuff and how to load it because it all makes me feel like I don’t really have to go into combat.”

His co-star Ben Foster added, “The Army has a different process for entering space than the Navy, and when you find these unique signatures in an accelerated learning process that draws on prior training, you begin to build a physical capability , you hope.

“Because the biggest nightmare for what we do — and it’s not that big of a nightmare, it just crushes the soul, is that someone with a green beret says, ‘No, I wouldn’t move like that.’

“And the people who help us on set who’ve lived life have it on their heads too, so we can’t let them down.

“That’s why we are all very motivated to give at least an impression of the culture in which one feels lived.”

The Contractor will be released on Amazon Prime Video on May 6th.
