Chris Tarrant has revealed that he spent the first decade of his television career in an alcoholic state.
The TV legend, 75, who hosted iconic children’s show Tis, confessed he would start his normal workday with a series of ‘livener’ pints, which he’d be down as early as 10.30am.
The beloved TV star was honest about it in his new memoir, It’s Not A Proper Job.
On the pages, Chris lifted the lid on landing his breakthrough role as presenter on Birmingham-based show ATV Today – and how his drinking impacted his role.
Chris explained that on his first day on the job he was “taught the basics” by going to the nearby pub for a drink.
The TV star admitted his boss molested him with alcohol at 10.30am – and after his first day at work it became normal.
He wrote: “The day I started I met a nice guy named John Swallow. His idea for showing me the ropes was to go to The Crown pub.
“It was just after 9:30 and my new boss was pouring pints down my throat.
“This became the normal pattern for most of the next 10 years. We took what we always called ‘food’ and then started our day.
“We would almost certainly have a few more at lunchtime, and then there was the Green Room – open during the broadcast.”
Chris’ admission comes after the TV legend was slapped with a 12-month drink driving ban in 2018.
After his driving ban Chris told The Mirror that he has “learned his lesson”.
In a 2019 interview, he emphasized, “I was being silly and I learned my lesson.
“It’s the little things that I miss. I can’t just go to the shops and we’re right in the middle of it.”
