Christ’s Hospital student meets King Charles III

Since the founding of Christ’s Hospital School, it has been a tradition for the Head Boy, known as the Senior Grecian, to greet and address the new monarch. Since the coronation of Charles III. is scheduled for next May, the continuation of this tradition is being discussed.

Christ’s Hospital was founded in 1552 by the young King Edward VI. Founded weeks before his death to take in and educate destitute children living on the streets of London. The recently vacated Greyfriars building in the City of London was donated and the school occupied the same land for 350 years until 1902 with the opening of the Horsham site where the school is today.

Since then, the school has maintained a close relationship with the monarch and the City of London. After the late Queen and all her predecessors, King Charles III. a patron of the school.

It is traditional for the Senior Grecian (Head Boy or Head Boy of Christ’s Hospital) to make a ‘faithful address’, a speech, to the new monarch around the time of his coronation. It is either spoken or submitted as a manuscript. In November 1837, Frederick Gifford Nash welcomed Queen Victoria on her first entry into the City of London; A relief carving at Temple Bar Memorial on the beach marks the occasion. Most recently, Elizabeth II was presented as a scroll on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral on 9 June 1953, a week after her coronation.

This means there may be a chance for Maddie Loveless, the school’s current Senior Grecian, to continue this custom. “There are so many complicated traditions at CH and it’s an honor to be part of one of them. It would be a great privilege to be involved in this project,” she says.
