Chrome version 100 comes with an updated logo in tow

Google’s Chrome browser has updated to version 100, almost 14 years after it unveiled its clean design and all-encompassing “omnibox” to the world in 2008. For most of its history, the search giant’s browser has received a new version number about every six weeks, but over the past year the company has switched to a four-week cycle to deliver new features faster. According to Google, the version 100 update is now rolling out to stable channels Windows, Mac, Linux, Androidand iOS.

In my part of the world, 100 gets you a Telegram from the Queen, but Chrome’s first three-digit release has arrived with less fanfare and more “fixes and improvements.” The biggest change is the arrival of a refreshed logo. The new design removes some of the shadow detail from the 2014-era logo, making for a flatter look that better matches the app icons for Google’s other services.

Other changes coming with version 100 of Chrome include the removal of “Lite mode‘ in the browser’s Android app, which was previously designed to use less mobile data and load webpages faster. But as Chrome Support Manager Craig Tumblison explained in a post last monththe feature has become less necessary as mobile data costs have fallen and Chrome has become more data efficient in general.

There were fears that the transition to version 100 can cause problems for websites designed only to recognize browsers with two-digit version numbers. However, since Google has been warning about the transition for months, it’s likely that any major bugs have already been spotted and ironed out. However, if this is not the case, Google may freeze its browser’s version number at 99 while it fixes these issues.
