Church leaders have provided one Easter Message to emphasize the urgent need organ and black blood donors.

Patients who need a life-saving organ donation or blood transfusion have the best chance of finding donors of the same ethnic background.

The lack of African, Caribbean, or mixed-race donors means that patients from these races wait longer and some die before they can get one.

There are currently 607 black patients awaiting transplantation.

Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder more common in people living in Africa or the Caribbean that requires regular blood transfusions to treat and prevent painful symptoms.

Faith leaders from 30 black Christian organizations join NHS Blood and Transplant in support of the Easter 2022 Give Hope This campaign.

Bishop Mark Nicholson of ACTS Christian Ministries has been donating blood since the 1980s.

It wasn’t until after a recent donation that he realized he had the rare but highly sought-after Ro blood type, which is most commonly needed by people with sickle cell anemia. Bishop Nicholson said, “It was an amazing feeling to know that I have this important blood subtype, Ro.

“I connected it to my spirituality, knowing that I could do this one simple thing to save lives in the black African and Caribbean community was amazing.”

The Mirror has launched a campaign to recruit the 75,000 regular blood donors the NHS needs to recover from the pandemic. Black ethnicity donors are 10 times more likely to have the Ro subtype, which is needed to treat many sickle cell patients.

Minister of Health Sajid Javid said: “We need all communities to work together to save and transform the lives of thousands.”

The NHS needs 450 new blood donors each day to ensure a continuous supply and meet patients’ needs all year round.

Some areas of the country have limited appointments for first-time donors, so donors are advised to look for an appointment a few weeks or months in advance if needed.
