Cillian Murphy debuts as ‘father of the atomic bomb’ in Oppenheimer teaser

For the first time, Cillian Murphy plays J Robert Oppenheimer, who is credited with building the atomic bomb.

Peaky Blinders, 46, takes on the role for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film about the Manhattan Project, America’s World War II plan to be the first to develop a nuclear weapon.

The minute-long trailer shows Murphy standing in front of a window overlooking the desert as the clock counts down to “the world changed forever”.

Murphy was also seen walking down a hallway surrounded by other physicists, his face obscured by his hat.

As flames flared across the screen, a voice said, “You’ve given them the power to self-destruct and make him the most important man that ever lived.”

Theoretical physicist Oppenheimer lived from 1904 to 1967 and is known as the “father of the atomic bomb”.

Emily Blunt will play Katherine, Oppenheimer’s wife, while Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr are also expected to appear.

The film is based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph And Tragedy Of J Robert Oppenheimer, by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin.

Murphy is Nolan’s favorite collaborator, 51, with the pair previously working together on the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk.

Like director Oppenheimer, Nolan wrote the screenplay for the film.

Oppenheimer was released on July 21, 2023.
