Sid Meier, the creator of the Civilization franchise, says that video game companies could lose audiences if they continue to focus heavily on different types of monetization tactics like microtransactions and NFTs.
In an interview with the BBC, Meier explained, “People can assume a game is going to be fun and what it takes to be successful is more cinema or money or whatever – but what if the core isn’t there with good gameplay, it won’t work.” The point is that the game needs to be fun, first and foremost. Gameplay is an important factor to keep players happy and engaged with the product.

Over the years, games have changed the business model, and now some games rely on microtransactions as well as in-app purchases. Recently, some companies, such as Ubisoft, have embraced NFT as a new way to make more money despite the backlash from the gaming community.
Meier says the game is relatively cheap to work out and doesn’t require a lot of chefs in the kitchen compared to all aspects of making a game. As a result, the importance of gameplay and the game design itself can be overlooked. He further explains, “I think we need to make sure that our games continue to be high quality and fun to play – there are so many forms of entertainment today.”
He also said that companies shouldn’t expect constant growth, noting that trends in the entertainment space are constantly changing. “There are so many other ways people can spend their leisure time… I think the way the internet works, once the change starts to happen, people will run home,” says Meier. that side of the ship,” Meier said.
For him, gameplay is what makes video games a unique medium of entertainment. Once companies start to think of games as just an investment vehicle to make more money, they lose sight of what really matters: making games fun.
Meier’s focus on fun seems to have come into play as Civilization continues to be the popular video game franchise whose core gameplay returns to the first game in the series. Read IGN’s review of Civilization 6 here.
