Claire Foy says her love for Imelda Staunton drew her back to The Crown

Claire Foy has said that she reprized the role of the Queen in the latest series of The Crown because of her love for Imelda Staunton and because “it’s such a lovely thing to do”.

The 38-year-old actress appeared in a flashback scene that opened the fifth Netflix television series, showing the late Queen’s visit to Clydebank in 1953 to launch the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Foy played the Queen in the first two series, Olivia Colman took on series three and four, and Staunton starred in series five and six.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, she said: “I went back and did it again because it was worth doing and I really love Imelda, I think she’s amazing.”

Production on the sixth and final installment of The Crown is underway, with scenes to be filmed this week at Winchester Cathedral.

Foy also discussed her film Women Talking, about a group of women in an isolated religious colony trying to bring to light a series of sexual assaults by several male members.

The film, inspired by true events in Bolivia, also stars Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw and Frances McDormand, and was nominated for best picture at the Oscars.

When asked if she would attend the ceremony in March, Foy said: “I don’t know. There are 12 of us in the cast so it depends on who they choose to go with.

“It was my son’s birthday so maybe I shouldn’t have gone. Either way, I’m going to have a great time.”

When asked about playing a member of the Mennonite community, she added: “We had no hair and no makeup and wore polyester skirts, so what got us filming was the thought of a meal. party when we can put on makeup. up and shave our legs.

“I thought not having to worry about shaving would be a really empowering moment, but actually it was horrible and reminded me of puberty.”

The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One and iPlayer on Friday 27 January at 10:40pm.
